Scientology and Autism – Mutually Exclusive (WTF??)
At this point, no one really needs to sit down and detail how bogus Scientology is. The now-infamous South Park episode did a pretty admirable job of that amidst skewering some of its highest-profile celebrity participants. But something I read today really turned my stomach. It’s one thing to choose to be an idiot and partake in this “religion,” but it’s an entirely different matter when that choice starts negatively impacting others who do not have the ability to make that choice on their own.
What Would Tyler Durden Do? – a site not necessarily known for its journalistic poignancy – actually has a pretty succinct summary of the latest development(s) in a story involving the Travoltas (that’s John and Kelly) and their autistic son, Jett.
In a nutshell: Scientology refuses to acknowledge that autism is a real affliction, thus the Travoltas have used their extensive medical and scientific analytical ignorance prowess to determine that Jett in fact has a case of Kawasaki disease…
To elaborate, using a few quotations from the WebMD links provided above, the Travoltas insist that their child, who has a neurological disorder characterized as such…
Children with autism have trouble communicating. They have trouble understanding what other people think and feel. This makes it very hard for them to express themselves either with words or through gestures, facial expressions and touch.
An autistic child who is very sensitive may be greatly troubled — sometimes even pained — by sounds, touches, smells or sights that seem normal to others.
Autistic children may have repeated body movements such as rocking or hand flapping. They may have unusual responses to people, attachments to objects, resistance to change in their routines and/or aggressive or self-injurious behavior. At times they may seem not to notice people, objects or activities in their surroundings. Some children with autism also develop seizures, in some cases not until adolescence.
…actually has a disease with the below symptoms:
- Red, bloodshot eyes, usually without pus or discharge.
- A red body rash that varies in size, shape, and consistency. The rash rarely blisters and is usually most obvious in the torso or groin area.
- Red, swollen, cracked lips and a red (“strawberry”) tongue and lining of the mouth.
- Firm, swollen hands and feet with shiny red palms and soles. The skin begins to shed and peel between 1 and 3 weeks after the fever starts. Peeling starts beneath the fingernails and toenails and slowly spreads to the palms and soles.
- Swelling of lymph nodes in the neck.
I can see how easily they could get confused. It’s quite obvious that all of his outbursts, withdrawn behavior, and lack of reactions to emotions and body language are simply his manner of coping with the frustration of those pesky swollen lymph nodes. At least the watchful spirit of L. Ron Hubbard has managed to stave off every single physical symptom of the disease.
Furthermore, the Travoltas have determined that the root cause of this affliction is environmental toxins in their carpet. I really, really wish that I was making this up.
Hollywood, Interrupted has a extensive report on the Travolta’s neighbors, who have an autistic 4 year old and apparently are attempting to bring in social services to intervene.
And lastly, as if there was a lack of irony surrounding a religion with a name that etymologically means “knowing how to know” refuting every medical and scientific tenet accepted worldwide, Hollywood, Interrupted reported about a year ago that John Travolta’s brother – Joey Travolta – is a major autism activist!
Rarely do I use exclamation points, but I honestly couldn’t help it there.
The article details how the reports of Jett’s condition were independently verified and corroborated by 5 sources, as well as the Travoltas’ refusal to attend any of the autism awareness events sponsored by other prominent celebrities with autistic children.
In case you’re still in Scientology’s court at this point (Mr. Cruise…I’m honored…please tell John hello), check out the world’s premiere anti-Scientology site. This is one determined Norwegian, who has kept the site running (with a high-profile) despite repeated attempts by the “Church” to shut him down through any avenue possible.
But most importantly, please click here for any number of ways to contribute your time, effort, energy, and/or money to autism awareness.
It is only with your help that we can hunt down the vicious purveyor of disease named Kawasaki and his motorcyle riding ninja minions (what the hell) so he may be burned at the stake.

My mother-in-law is a speech therapist and regularly works with autistic children. She was telling me today how autism is so much more common among children these days than it was in past generations. And, it’s a worldwide affliction.
As much as I love Vincent Vega, the “parenting” decisions you describe above go beyond ignorance — they are nothing less than criminal.
The solution: Take Jett and the Cruise kid, Suri, and give them to Angelina Jolie. Then, lock Travolta and Cruise in Travolta’s 747 for a couple of weeks and let them fuck all of the “thetans” out of eachother so they can finally embrace their homosexuality and take off their Scientology blinders.
Love the site, Kent
RIP little guy…you may have blown the lid off this faulty lie of a religion. The article here is so pretelling, tragic, and just sad.
and now he is dead
Alas, 16 year old Jett Travolta just died suddenly from a “siezure” in the bathroom of their Bahamas abode. Sad sad sad.
On judgment day, the cults will all be revealed. The Bible was translated from original Hebrew hieroglyphics. It is as easy as 1,2,3,. God Bless the innocent children that are being raised by educated but ignorant parents. My daughter is a psychologist that works with the autistic children. Again, God Bless them.
I only just saw this, following the sad death of Jett Travolta, and am absolutely flabbergasted. As the parent of an autistic child, I cannot fathom ignoring the diagnosis in favor of one so incredibly different.
I don’t know that “acknowledging” autism would have helped Jett, but ignoring it surely didn’t.
Love the article. And love that first comment!
Having an autistic son myself, I was a little surprised to read today that Travolta’s son was likely autistic and that he, as a Scientologist, was refusing to accept it. Hence my search for “autism and Scientology” in Google and finding you as one of the first links.
I am not a religious person and I have immense issues with people who either refuse medical assistance (such as blood transfusions) on behalf of their minor children or who refuse to accept medical diagnosis on behalf of their minor children. My son gets speech and occupational therapy, as well people who are dedicated solely to him at his daycare centre. Jett, I’m feeling sure, was never treated for the disorder that he likely had and that is sad.
I need to do a little more research to really understand why Scientologist believe what they do about autism, but my initial response to the little I’ve read is similar to when I read about JWs refusing blood transfusions and ultimately dying of their injuries. It’s a sadness for these people who (in my opinion) blindly follow faith as a means to pleasing their God and gaining a place by his side.
I want to shake them into awareness! But then, I guess, they feel the same about me.

Your url is wrong, it’s xenu.net (not .com)
Great article! Thanks for posting it.
A sad ending to this story. I teach autistic children and with love and support these children can learn how to cope in the world, become socially aware, and contribute to society as a whole. Autism is a real disorder and with early intervention these children can become adults who are contributing members of society. It is sad that Jett’s disorder was ignored, because of a belief in a philosophy that was created by a science fiction author.
just reading this article on 1/4/09. How ironic (and sad) that you wrote this a year before Jett died. As a R.N. I hope the authorities will investigate and that the Travolta’s are found guilty of negligence and have their daughter removed from their home to save her life.
I laughed about the reply above.
[...] The Travolta’s maintained Jett had “Kawasaki Syndrome,” a disease caused, in this case, by home-based chemicals, rather than autism, a neurological disorder. The symptoms of the two are hardly similar. [...]

You know what? The Travoltas didn’t owe the world an “acknowledgement” that their son had problems. Jett was not a public persona, and deserved privacy. While I’m not a huge fan of the COS, they do NOT deny the existence of autism. They have issues with some drugs, and would have issues with the mercury, etc. that are in our vaccines (which others also have an issue with – others who are not into Scientology).
It isn’t like they left this young man at home all the time – they traveled with him, Travolta often flew ultralights with him, and they had two full time nannies for him as well. I know that anti-seizure meds don’t always work – and I knew a young man that was off of them for a time when they didn’t work.
How utterly sad for all of them. The Travolta’s would have been better served by working with their son and his diet rather than ignoring the reality of their situation. Children with autisim can make real progress with the right treatment, home and school environment and diet. For some reason they crave carbs, bad carbs but a gluten free diet can help and of course maintaining a very regular ordered schedule. Parents need to work daily to re-enforce the teachers. There are many levels of autism, many of these children can and will grown into contributing members of society and living independently. Others unfortunately will need a regular support system.
For those with babies and children, there are helpful toys that you can use to work with your children at home – perhaps due to the orderliness of the trains themselves, things such as Thomas the Tank is a great hit. There are some groups that are using the face of the Thomas the Tank to teach autistic kids to recognize different emotions by placing them on the ‘face’ of the train. Seems to work!
I know the Travolta’s are feeling great pain and loss – I just wish that their choice to practice Scientology hadn’t so limited their son’s life in so many ways.
How very tragic that these people lost their son. However, it is even more tragic that it may have been prevented. This article is so very profound. However, I do not want to speak ill of this family who are clearly caught up in a very sad situation and I wish them peace and comfort.
Poster ME..are you a member of CoS? You know a lot about the Travolta’s provision of care for their son. You say they (CoS)don’t deny the existence of autism..can you tell me where you read that they didn’t deny autism as illness? My son is autistic so i’m interested to see if there are any similitaries with the CoS cult’s offering of “kawasaki syndrome”.
I myself Have an autistic son… I understand not wanting to admit that your child is ” DIFFERENT”. All parents of Autistic children go through this at one point or another. It is the hardest thing to admit to yourself and the society around you. But to ignore your childs need for help strictly for your own selfish beliefs is not oly wrong it is immoral. I sure if his son could have made the choice to find help for himself he would have. Our children cannot speak for themselves… We are their voice. This opinion is dedicated to Gavin( my son ) and all of the other Children who don’t have a voice of their own. Jett may you rest in peace and may God find you and give you a voice to be heard!
